Exercise during adolescence attenuated depressive-like behaviors and hippocampal mitochondrial dysfunction following early life stress in adult male rats

چکیده مقاله:
Purpose: In this study, we assumed that treating animals with an antidepressant agents or voluntary running wheel exercise (RW) during adolescence may have protective effects against early life stress (ELS) which can impact on behavior and mitochondrial function. Evidence indicates that ELS has deleterious effects on brain and behavior and increases the risk of mental disorders such as depression. Methods: Maternal separation stress (MS) model to male rats (postnatal day or PND2-PND14) were performed to determination of depressive-like behaviors using the forced swimming test, splash test and mitochondrial function in the hippocampus. Results: Treating MS rats with both RW and fluoxetine (5 mg/kg/day, i.p) during adolescence (PND30-PND60) produced antidepressant-like effects in animals and attenuated the negative effects of ELS on hippocampal mitochondrial function in adult male rats. The results of present study showed that (non) pharmacological treatments during adolescence are able to produce protective effects against long-lasting effects of ELS on behavior and mitochondrial function. Conclusion: These results highlighted the importance of adolescence as an important stage of life and the long-lasting effects of ELS on hippocampal mitochondrial function which can suggest the possible involvement of abnormal mitochondrial function in pathophysiology of depression following experiencing ELS.

Effects of troxerutin on anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors induced by chronic mild stress in adult male rats
Objective(s):Chronic stress has been linked to the pathophysiology of mood disorders including anxiety and depression. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of troxerutin (TRX), as a flavonol, on stress-induced anxiety and depression.Materials and Methods: 56 animals were randomly divided into seven groups (n=8 per group) as follows: control, saline, TRX 50, TRX 150, TRX 300, Diazep...

Background and purpose: Stressful events in early-life induce metabolic disorders in adolescence. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of early-life stress on number or area of Langerhans islets in exposure to foot-shock and psychological stress in male rats. Materials and methods: The rats were divided into six groups: control (without stress), early-stress (stress at 2 weeks o...
متن کاملEarly life stress induces renal dysfunction in adult male rats but not female rats.
Maternal separation (MatSep) is a model of behavioral stress during early life. We reported that MatSep exacerbates ANG II-induced hypertension in adult male rats. The aims of this study were to determine whether exposure to MatSep in female rats sensitizes blood pressure to ANG II infusion similar to male MatSep rats and to elucidate renal mechanisms involved in the response in MatSep rats. Wi...
متن کاملThe effect of 4-weeks voluntary exercise on separation anxiety disorder in rats
Background: Separation anxiety is the most common anxiety disorder in children. The neglected treatment of this disorder at early ages may be a risk factor for other childhood and adult psychological disorders. The early years of life are considered to be one of the most critical stages of human development and any physical or psychological damage will cause the effects on sustainability in oth...
متن کاملThe Effects of Early-Life Predator Stress on Anxiety- and Depression-Like Behaviors of Adult Rats
Childhood emotional trauma contributes significantly to certain psychopathologies, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. In experimental animals, however, whether or not early-life stress results in behavioral abnormalities in adult animals still remains controversial. Here, we investigated both short-term and long-term changes of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors of Wistar rats after be...
